negative tone and reference this person would give if contacted by a potential employer.

"I'm not really comfortable making that judgment. Did he actually list me as a reference?"
Is this person eligible for re-hire within your organization?

"No."
Could you fully describe the circumstances and reason for the separation?

"I'm not sure what he told you, but we had some issues with him. We decided that it was better that he no longer work here."
Could you suggest anyone else that I should speak to regarding this individual?

"No, he reported directly to me."
Additional Notes and Comments:
After leaving several messages (5) for Mr. Jones, he finally returned my call. Upon explaining the reason for my call, Mr. Jones agreed to speak with me. His tone was professional although a bit uncomfortable. Please note that Mr. Jones became very uncomfortable while answering the performance evaluation questions. At one point Mr. Jones stated: "I probably shouldn't be answering these questions. I'd really rather not. Suffice it to say that there was much room for improvement in Jim."

Sample Basic Reference Report #3
This detailed report includes the comprehensive interview we conduct with your
reference (former boss, current employer, etc.). The report below shows the kind of
positive tone and reference this person would give if contacted by a potential employer.

Are you able to enthusiastically recommend this person?

"Absolutely. Jim did a great job."
Is this person eligible for re-hire within your organization?

"Without a doubt. I was sorry to see him leave."
Could you fully describe the circumstances and reason for the separation?

"We are going through a reorganization and some positions were eliminated. I'm not sure if Jim was actually let go or if he decided to leave on his own. Either way, it had nothing to do with his performance."
Could you suggest anyone else that I should speak to regarding this individual?

"Ultimately, Jim reported to me, but he also reported to the Director of Accounting, Bill Robertson."
Additional Notes and Comments:
After leaving just one message for Mr. Jones he returned my call. Upon explaining the reason for the call, Mr. Jones agreed to speak with me. His tone was pleasant and professional. Mr. Jones was sincerely sorry that Mr. Smith was no longer with the firm and several times throughout the conversation stated positive remarks such as "I hope gets on with a solid company." "He is a very hard and conscientious worker." "He is really missed around here."
